Meet the Farmily
Our diverse group of animal residents provides students with daily opportunities for connection and hands-on learning:
Therapy Dogs: Our two certified therapy dogs are the soul of our school. Whether they are providing a calming presence during a difficult lesson or offering a friendly wag in the hallway, they help regulate emotions and build a sense of security for every student.
The Feathered Friends: Our chickens and turkeys offer a front-row seat to the wonders of life cycles and sustainable agriculture. Students take pride in collecting eggs and observing the unique social dynamics of the flock.
Small & Gentle Companions: Our rabbits and guinea pigs teach the art of gentleness. These smaller creatures are perfect for teaching quiet observation and the specific care requirements of mammals.
The Classroom Anchor: Our fish provide a serene environment for focused study, while serving as a simple yet effective introduction to aquatic ecosystems and biology.
Why the "Farmily" Matters
Caring for living creatures is far more than an extracurricular activity; it is a vital pedagogical tool. By integrating animals into our daily routine, we support our students' development in three key areas:
1. Character & Empathy
Taking care of an animal requires looking outside of oneself. Students learn to anticipate the needs of another living being—understanding that the chickens need water and the rabbits need a clean hutch regardless of the weather or their own mood. This fosters a deep sense of accountability and compassion.
2. Practical Science & Curriculum
Our animals bring our curriculum to life. From studying genetics and heredity in our rabbits to understanding the nitrogen cycle through our fish tank, the Farmily provides tangible examples of complex scientific concepts. Whether it’s measuring feed (math) or journaling about animal behavior (language arts), the animals are integrated into every subject.
3. Emotional Regulation
Research shows that interacting with animals lowers cortisol levels and reduces anxiety. For many students, a few minutes spent with a therapy dog or watching the guinea pigs can provide the "emotional reset" needed to return to their studies with a clear and focused mind.
Our Critter Club
Critter Club is an interactive, hands-on extension of our "Farmily" program where students take a leadership role in the daily care and stewardship of our campus animals.
It is designed to transform casual observation into active responsibility through:
Animal Husbandry: Members learn the specifics of feeding, grooming, and habitat maintenance for our therapy dogs, poultry, and small mammals.
Scientific Observation: Students track growth cycles, monitor animal health, and study behavioral patterns, directly applying classroom biology and life science concepts.
Leadership & Teamwork: Older students often mentor younger peers, working together to ensure every member of the Farmily is healthy and happy.
Empathy in Action: By prioritizing the needs of the animals, club members develop a deep sense of compassion and the "soft skills" required for emotional intelligence.
In essence, Critter Club is where the classroom meets the coop, allowing students to become the primary caretakers of our unique school ecosystem.
Our Farmily
Our Farmily: Growing Together at Global Connection Academy
At Global Connection Academy, we believe that some of the most profound lessons aren’t found in a textbook, but in the heartbeat of a living creature. Our unique "Farmily" is a cornerstone of our campus life, turning our school into a living laboratory where empathy, responsibility, and science intersect.
"To care for a living thing is to understand our place in the world." Our Farmily ensures that GCA students experience both academic knowledge and with the kindness and stewardship necessary to lead in a global community.
